Downton Abbey is a wonderful British drama series where we get to observe the lives of the people living and working within the walls of a large English estate.
One of the things that caught my attention was when I saw the ultra-wealthy “upstairs” and the worker bees’ “downstairs” contrasting thinking. How they differed in their ideas of love, marriage, working, and money struck me.
Downstairs are very familiar to most of us, 98% of us. We think in linear terms. We are born, go to school, get a job, buy a car, a home, fall in love, get married, have children, send them to school, retire, travel a bit, then coast into the grave hoping we have enough to bury ourselves.
Whereas the ones living upstairs think multidimensionally or in layers. They believe there’s more than one way to live. They are born into wealth, and every step of their development is geared toward wealth management education.
For them, life goes like this: You are born, you go to the “right “school primarily to teach you how to manage an estate, socialize, make connections and expand your knowledge. After your grooming is complete, you are presented to the society that will bring you the best possible advantages in life. You are given a house, a car and a position.
All these possessions they are expected to care for, create more of them and safeguard for the next generation. They marry per the status of their family, often into an alliance with another influential family, securing wealth and position for both families. Then, do the same for their children.
Their work is to preserve this great wealth, invest, create new opportunities, and problem-solve and leverage what they already have, such as property rentals, farming, art exhibitions, etc. Travel and luxury are part of their lifestyle. They go to the grave with every knowledge; they can afford their funerals, and what they accomplished will generously provide for many generations to come.
The character Robert Crawly, Lord of the Downton Abbey estate, admitted to marrying for his wife’s money but clarifies that he doesn’t regret it; this marriage secured the future of the holdings and his future children’s lifestyle. This is not an exact quote, but he said, “I married for Downton; Downton is my life, it’s my everything.”
Talk about commitment to this idea!
There is another story plot in the house, the kitchen maid, Daisy, is coerced into marrying a dying young soldier so that he could leave her his soldier’s pension. He loved her, but she wasn’t in love with him, and the guilt and shame she bore were such, she couldn’t accept his gift.
See the difference?
Are you a linear thinker regarding money, banking and investing? No shaming here! We, too, have followed this line of thinking.
But what if we could change our way of thinking and our path? What if we became creators of ideas, problem solvers, teachers, and examples of wealth builders to our families? For me, this has become my deepest desire.
How do we start this path change? Education! But education is not just for yourself but for the whole family.
There’s no use creating wealth if the next generation doesn’t know how to manage it or create it for themselves. Now, it won’t be easy; trust us we know! They want the money now; this is why educating the next generation is vital.
